Zhuhai travel guide: beaches, islands, and the HZMB gateway

Zhuhai rarely appears on first-time visitors’ itineraries, yet it punches well above its name recognition. Laid out along a granite coastline facing dozens of small islands, it is the only Greater Bay Area city with actual sandy beaches within the urban core. The air quality beats Guangzhou. The pace is slower than Shenzhen. And since the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge (HZMB) opened in 2018, it has been effortlessly reachable without flying.

Zhuhai’s position in the Greater Bay Area

Zhuhai occupies the western shore of the Pearl River estuary, directly south of Guangzhou and sharing a border checkpoint with Macau at Gongbei. Its status as a Special Economic Zone (SEZ, designated the same year as Shenzhen in 1980) gave it decades of preferential policies, but a smaller industrial base than its eastern neighbours meant it developed at a gentler pace. Today its main draws are:

• Chimelong Resort on Hengqin Island — including Ocean Kingdom, Spaceship park, and resort hotels (see the Zhuhai Chimelong Ocean Kingdom guide)
• Yuanmingyuan New (New Summer Palace replica) — a vast recreation of the Beijing palace destroyed in 1860, worth a half-day
• Lover’s Road (Qinglv Road) — a 28-km seafront promenade running past temples, pavilions, and rocky coves
• The Hundred Islands — boat trips to uninhabited islets for snorkelling and beachcombing
• Gongbei Port — the border crossing to Macau, surrounded by cheap seafood restaurants and a bustling shopping district

Getting to Zhuhai

From Shenzhen

By ferry (recommended): Shekou Port → Zhuhai Jiuzhou or Jiuzhou Port: 40–55 minutes, CNY 70–90, departures roughly every 60–90 minutes from 07:00 to 20:30. Buy tickets at the terminal or via WeChat mini-programs.

By HZMB: Take the shuttle bus from Shenzhen Bay Port (near Houhai metro station) to Zhuhai Port. The bus costs CNY 65–75 and takes ~75 minutes on the bridge. More scenic but slower than the ferry.

By bus: Coach from Futian or Nanshan coach stations to Zhuhai: ~2.5 hours, CNY 80. Good budget option.

From Hong Kong

Ferry from China Ferry Terminal (Tsim Sha Tsui) or Kowloon City Ferry Pier to Zhuhai Jiuzhou: ~75 minutes, HKD 250–300. HZMB shuttle from Hong Kong Airport to Zhuhai: ~50 minutes.

Private HZMB limo transfer: Hong Kong → Zhuhai → Macau

From Guangzhou

High-speed rail: Guangzhou South → Zhuhai station: 35–50 minutes, CNY 50–75. Trains run throughout the day.

Intercity bus: ~90 minutes, CNY 60–80.

What to see and do

Lover’s Road and the Fisher Girl Statue

The 28-km coastal promenade is best done on an e-bike (hire from CNY 30/hour along the road). The bronze Fisher Girl statue (Zhuhai’s de facto icon, a mythological figure rising from the sea) stands at the northern end — worth a photo but surrounded by tour groups from 09:00 to 17:00. Go early morning for clear shots.

New Yuanmingyuan (New Summer Palace)

This 1.39 km² replica of the original imperial garden complex in Beijing is the city’s most ambitious cultural project. Built in the late 1990s, it includes palace halls, lakes, imperial pavilions, and a daily fountain show. Entry CNY 90 (adult), open 08:30–17:30. Allow 3–4 hours. Located in the northern Xiangzhou district, 25 minutes by taxi from Gongbei.

Guided day trip: Guangzhou → Zhuhai New Yuanmingyuan + coast

Hengqin Island

The dedicated free-trade zone south of the main city, Hengqin is home to Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, Spaceship park, international hotels, and a growing shopping district. The island connects via a free shuttle ferry (10 minutes from the Hengqin checkpoint) and by the Gongbei–Hengqin metro line extension (opening late 2026). Macau can be reached from Hengqin via the Lotus Bridge in about 10 minutes by bus or taxi.

Beaches

Zhuhai’s most accessible sandy beach is Qinglu Beach near the southern end of Lover’s Road. Water quality varies — check local reports before swimming May–October when runoff increases. Dongao Island (30-minute ferry from Baiteng Wharf) has cleaner water and a proper beach village; worth the trip April–June.

Gongbei border zone

The area around the Gongbei Port checkpoint is a shopping zoo targeting Macau day-trippers: perfume, cosmetics, shoes, and endless snack shops. Prices are not particularly good — locals cross to Macau for better deals. The nearby Gongbei Underground Shopping City is a maze of stalls selling cheap clothing. Worth a wander if you are killing time before a ferry.

Day trips from Zhuhai

The Kaiping diaolou watchtowers are 2.5 hours by bus — an underrated UNESCO site. Zhaoqing’s Danxia landforms are reachable in ~2 hours by coach or HSR from nearby Jiangmen station.

Where to eat in Zhuhai

Zhuhai is underrated for seafood. The cluster of restaurants at Doumen Old Street (40 min north by taxi) serves Cantonese freshwater fish at local prices: a full meal for two runs CNY 120–200. In the Gongbei area, Qinghui Garden Tea House (inside the garden park) does a proper morning dim sum. Street food along Gongbei South Road — congee, turnip cake, stewed tofu — is excellent and cheap (CNY 10–20 per snack).

Where to stay

Budget: The neighbourhood around Zhuhai station (Pearl Land Hotel, from CNY 250/night) is walkable to Gongbei and has good transport links.

Mid-range: The Hengqin Sofitel (from CNY 900/night) gives Chimelong resort access and clean beach proximity.

Splurge: Chimelong Penguin Hotel (from CNY 1,200/night) includes early park entry and is the obvious choice for families doing the theme park.

Practical logistics

Currency: CNY everywhere on the mainland side. If you are crossing to Macau, carry some MOP or HKD (Macau accepts HKD at par).

Mobile payment: WeChat Pay and Alipay work throughout; foreign-linked cards accepted at hotels and major malls.

Getting around: Zhuhai has a small but growing metro (Lines 1 and 2 cover the main tourist corridor). Didi is reliable. A taxi from Gongbei to Hengqin Chimelong costs CNY 50–70.

Visa: Standard China visa required for most nationalities. The Zhuhai/Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area visa-on-arrival (144-hour variant) applies at Gongbei land border for eligible nationalities — check eligibility before travel. If entering via ferry from Hong Kong, you enter mainland China at the Zhuhai port; ensure your China visa is valid.

Connectivity: Mainland rules apply — install a VPN before crossing from Hong Kong if you need Google, WhatsApp, or Instagram.

Day trip or overnight stay?

A day trip from Shenzhen works if your priority is a single sight — the New Yuanmingyuan replica or a Lover’s Road walk can both be done between a morning ferry and an evening return. But Zhuhai rewards an overnight stay more than most Greater Bay Area day-trip destinations: the Gongbei seafood restaurants are genuinely better after dark, the coastal promenade is at its most pleasant at sunset, and staying overnight removes the pressure of catching a specific return ferry. If you are also doing Chimelong Ocean Kingdom, a one-night stay is close to mandatory — trying to fit the park and a same-day return to Shenzhen makes for an exhausting finish to what should be a relaxed trip.

Honest assessment

Zhuhai has a lot to offer but gets marketed primarily as a Chimelong gateway. If theme parks are not your thing, the city still rewards a half-day on the coastal promenade and a seafood dinner. A 2-night stay combined with a Macau day trip and a Chimelong day makes for an excellent mini-break from Shenzhen or Hong Kong.

Zhuhai’s art and culture scene

Zhuhai is developing a genuine cultural presence beyond its resort economy. The Zhuhai Museum (珠海博物馆), opened in 2021 in the Xiangzhou district, covers the city’s history from prehistoric fishing communities to the SEZ period, with good English translation. Entry free, Tuesday–Sunday 09:00–17:00.

Zhuhai Planning Exhibition Hall (adjacent to the museum) is a vast architecture and urban-planning display that traces Hengqin’s transformation from farmland to international resort zone. Unusual in China for being relatively candid about the process of urban redevelopment. Free entry.

The Zhuhai Arts Centre on Lover’s Road hosts travelling exhibitions from major Chinese museums, typically running 3–8 weeks. Check the schedule at the time of your visit.

Hengqin International Art Village: A cluster of studios and galleries on Hengqin Island, developed alongside the Chimelong resort. Works by contemporary Chinese artists, with permanent installations scattered through the resort landscape. Not a major arts destination by international standards, but pleasant if you have an afternoon between park days.

Fishing and maritime heritage

Before the SEZ, Zhuhai was a fishing prefecture — a loose collection of fishing villages and small islets where Cantonese, Hoklo, and Tanka boat people communities lived alongside each other. Some of this heritage survives:

Jiuzhou Harbour: The original fishing harbour in northern Zhuhai, still active for small-boat fishing, with a morning market (05:30–08:00) where the night’s catch goes to local restaurants and market vendors. The scene is genuine and photogenic — fishing families sorting catch, wholesale buyers, ice trucks, squabbling gulls. Worth an early alarm call.

Yeli Island: A small island in Zhuhai Bay accessible by ferry (15 min, CNY 15), Yeli has a small former fishing village now partially converted to a seafood restaurant strip. Less touristic than the city centre; the ferry ride itself gives good bay views.

Wanshan Archipelago: 104 islands scattered south of Zhuhai, several accessible by ferry from Wanshan Pier (60–120 min depending on destination). Dong’ao Island has the most developed facilities including a beach, diving centre, and accommodation. Nan’ao and Kuishan islands are quieter with better snorkelling. Ferry tickets CNY 80–150 return; advance booking recommended June–September.

Shopping and local markets

Zhuhai lacks the hyper-commercial energy of Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei or Guangzhou’s Tianhe, which is either a relief or a disappointment depending on what you are after.

Gongbei Underground Shopping City: Large maze of small stalls selling clothing, accessories, electronics, and cosmetics. Prices are wholesale-ish; quality varies. Primarily of interest for its atmosphere rather than bargains — the range of goods reflects Zhuhai’s proximity to Macau and Hong Kong cross-border trade.

Lianhua Road Night Market: Near the Jida neighbourhood, this evening market (18:00–23:00) has food vendors, clothing stalls, and cheap household goods. The food section is better than the shopping.

Duty-free at Gongbei Port: The Macau border crossing at Gongbei has duty-free shops on both sides. Cosmetics, liquor, tobacco, and electronics are significantly cheaper on the Macau side; most Hong Kong residents doing the HZMB trip load up on return.

Zhuhai for families

Beyond Chimelong Ocean Kingdom on Hengqin, Zhuhai has several lower-key family activities:

Chimelong International Ocean Tourist Resort: The broader resort compound (around Ocean Kingdom) includes a water park (Chimelong Water Park, separate ticket CNY 220), mini-golf, and a children’s science education zone. The water park is the best in the GBA for young families outside of the main Ocean Kingdom gates — less intense than the main park, with slides and wave pools.

Zhuhai Science Discovery Centre: Small but well-designed interactive science museum near the municipal museum in Xiangzhou. Entry CNY 30. Good for children 5–12 on a rainy day.

Ocean Leisure Farm: A combination aquarium-restaurant-farm park 30 minutes north of the city. Visitors can watch fish feeding, try freshwater prawn fishing (租钓竿竿, rental rod CNY 30/hour), and eat the catch. Very local in character; no English signage.

Getting around Zhuhai

Metro: Lines 1 and 2 cover the main tourist corridors (Gongbei ↔ Jiuzhou Harbour ↔ Xiangzhou). The system is new (Line 1 opened 2020) and efficient, with good air conditioning.

Buses: Dense bus network; useful for Hengqin and the southern beaches. Fares CNY 2–5.

Didi: Works throughout, including Hengqin. Prices comparable to Shenzhen.

Bicycle hire: Blue e-bikes are available throughout the city via the city bike-share app. The Lover’s Road is fully cycle-friendly.

Ferry within the Pearl River Delta: Services from Jiuzhou Passenger Port connect to multiple destinations including Shenzhen Shekou (45 min), Hong Kong (75 min), Nansha/Guangzhou (90 min), and Zhongshan (45 min). Check schedules in advance — some routes have limited daily departures.

Walking pace: Zhuhai is genuinely more walkable than Shenzhen or Guangzhou in the central Xiangzhou and Gongbei areas, where streets are lower-traffic and the seafront paths are flat and shaded in places. If your PRD trip has felt rushed elsewhere, Zhuhai is the city to slow down in — plan at least one afternoon with no fixed itinerary.

Frequently asked questions about visiting Zhuhai

Do I need a separate visa for Zhuhai from Hong Kong?

Yes — Zhuhai is mainland China, so you need a valid China visa or qualify for the visa-free/visa-on-arrival scheme. Check current eligibility at the official Chinese embassy website before travel. Hong Kong and Macau are separate jurisdictions and do not require a China visa.

How far is Zhuhai from Shenzhen?

By ferry (Shekou to Jiuzhou): 45–55 minutes. By HZMB bus: about 90 minutes. By coach: 2.5 hours. There is no direct high-speed rail connection; you would route via Guangzhou South.

Can you walk across the border from Macau to Zhuhai?

Yes. The Gongbei Port checkpoint (open 06:00–01:00) is a pedestrian crossing between Macau’s Border Gate and Zhuhai Gongbei. It is one of the busiest land borders in the world — queues peak on weekday lunchtimes and weekend evenings.

Is Zhuhai good for families with children?

Should I stay overnight in Zhuhai or do it as a day trip from Shenzhen?

An overnight stay is worth it if you are also visiting Chimelong Ocean Kingdom or want an unhurried seafood dinner in Gongbei — trying to fit a theme park day and a same-day return to Shenzhen is exhausting. A single-sight day trip (the New Yuanmingyuan replica, or a Lover’s Road walk) works fine without staying over.

Is the ferry or the HZMB bridge faster from Shenzhen to Zhuhai?

The Shekou ferry is often the quicker option at 40–55 minutes door to door, despite the HZMB bridge’s higher profile. The bridge shuttle from Shenzhen Bay Port takes around 75–90 minutes. Compare current schedules for both before booking, since ferry frequency varies by day.
