37 guides →Good to know about the Greater Bay Area
The Pearl River Delta is one of the most dynamic travel regions on earth โ five distinct cities within two hours of each other, each with a different currency, visa rule, and atmosphere. Shenzhen is the electric heart of the Greater Bay Area: a metropolis that grew from fishing villages into a global tech hub in four decades, with neighborhoods as varied as the polished towers of Futian, the leafy expat enclave of Nanshan, the gritty market energy of Luohu, and the creative arts district of OCT Loft.
Cross the border north and Guangzhou offers ten centuries of Cantonese culture, street-food tradition, and the spectacle of Canton Tower reflected in the Pearl River. Head west across the 55-kilometre Hong KongโZhuhaiโMacau Bridge and Zhuhai reveals a relaxed coastal city of islands and seafood that almost nobody puts on their GBA itinerary.
Macau is a 30-minute bus ride further โ baroque Portuguese churches beside towering casino resorts, the real ruins of Sรฃo Paulo, and egg tarts that eclipse anything you will find in Lisbon. Slide south into Hong Kong and you enter one of the world's great cities: Victoria Peak, Kowloon night markets, Lantau's Big Buddha, and harbour light shows that reward even the most seasoned traveller.
This destinations hub maps every city and sub-region worth your time in the Greater Bay Area, with honest assessments of when to go and what to skip.
Frequently asked questions about Greater Bay Area destinations
Do I need separate visas for Shenzhen, Hong Kong, and Macau?
Effectively yes โ they are three separate immigration zones. Most Western passports enter Hong Kong and Macau visa-free (90 days for US/EU/Canada/Australia). For mainland China (Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Zhuhai) you can use the Shenzhen 5-day visa-on-arrival at land borders, or the 240-hour transit exemption if you hold an onward ticket to a third country. Standard tourist visas are the fallback for longer stays.
Which city should I use as my base?
Shenzhen suits tech-curious travellers wanting low costs and central PRD access. Hong Kong is better for those who want seamless English signage, international banking, and uncensored internet without any setup. Guangzhou is ideal for food-focused travellers chasing Cantonese cooking at its source. Macau works as a one-to-two night detour rather than a base.
How long does it take to travel between PRD cities?
Shenzhen to Hong Kong by high-speed rail takes 14โ24 minutes (Futian to West Kowloon). Guangzhou South to Hong Kong West Kowloon is 47โ60 minutes on the same line. The HZMB shuttle bus from Hong Kong port to Macau runs about 45 minutes. Zhuhai to Macau is a short bus or taxi ride once across the bridge.
Is Shenzhen worth visiting on its own, or is it just a Hong Kong day trip?
Shenzhen is a full five-to-seven day destination in its own right. Futian's glass skyline, Nanshan's beach parks and design culture, OCT Loft's gallery complex, Huaqiangbei's layered electronics markets, and a migrant food scene spanning Chaoshan seafood to Hunanese spice are all genuine draws. Most Western itineraries barely scratch the surface.
Are the cities safe for solo travellers?
All five main GBA cities rank among Asia's safest urban environments. Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Macau, and Zhuhai have low violent crime rates. Standard precautions apply: watch for pickpockets in crowded metro stations, use Didi ride-hailing instead of unmarked taxis, and be wary of tea-house or electronics-market touts in tourist zones.
